This morning I had one of the biggest wake-up calls that I have ever had in my life. For my Dad’s birthday, he was given the book “Radical” by David Platt [thanks, Gee!!]. I was begging to hear something challenging so when my dad finished it he gave it to me to read. I hadn’t really had a good chance to get into it because it was during finals, but now I’m finally getting that chance! Now for this morning’s wake-up call…
I love mission trips; I always have. I can remember sitting in church and listening to them speak and when they said “God’s calling one of you”, I’d always wonder if God was calling me. Anyway, there’s something about that sentence that I’ve always heard, “called”. Platt made an interesting point in saying how we have taken a command from Jesus (Matthew 28: 19-20) and reduced it to a calling! “I find it interesting that we don’t do this with other words from Jesus. We take Jesus’ command in Matthew 28 to make disciples of all nations, and we say, “That means other people”. But we look at Jesus’ command in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest, “and we say, “Now, that means me”. Ouch! That kind of steps on your toes, huh?
We were created to enjoy God’s grace and expand his glory, giving him all of the credit for everything he has made possible. We are to expand his glory to all nations! It’s not a “calling”, it’s a command! God has blessed us so that all the earth will see his glory! He has given us more resources that could ever be imagined so that when we obey the command to go unto all nations, we will expand his glory!!!
In May, I’ll be going on my first out of the country mission trip to the Dominican Republic. I was already so excited because I’ll be getting to work with little precious Haitian orphans, but I read this and was literally ready to pack my bags and leave today. I cannot wait to obey my God and expand his glory!
